PRIVATE PRACTICE (PP) is banned for KGMU faculty. Or is it an indirect acceptance that varsity doctors are doing private practice?
The State Government banned private practice many years ago, but for the first time a missive has been shot off to various KGMU departments from the V-C office in this regard. Whatever it be, the missive has caused a flutter among the doctors.
This is being interpreted as a straight order from the chairperson of the varsity’s executive council that is the highest statutory body of the varsity.
Drafting ‘cleverly’ a circular upon PP by KGMU doctors, the V-C gave an order directing that ‘no faculty members of KGMU should indulge in private practice of any kind.’
Unlike earlier orders that were issued by the registrar office during the term of Prof Mahendra Bhandari, the recent circular comes straight from the V-C Prof Hari Gautam’s office. Thus each word has been kept carefully.
Reading the Section 37 point (3) of the UP KGMU Act 2002, the circular says the Act in unambiguous terms prohibits the teachers of KGMU to indulge in PP. A PIL has also currently engaged the attention of the high court.
The PP issue for KGMU doctors was earlier discussed with the State Government but no concrete decision has so far been taken by the state in this regard, the circular added.

{{/usCountry}}The order has made teachers apprehensive about its implications. This is because PP has always been a matter of debate among teachers. Some say it should be allowed after working hours, while others say it should be banned. But, the majority belongs to the former category.
At least 150 teachers from KGMU are engaged in PP whereas some have their own large set-ups.
Some of the faculty members are engaged in the practice with leading hospitals and nursing homes in the city.
The surgeons operate patients in these nursing homes and get the fee per operation while those from non-clinical departments work as consultants at private hospitals in the evening.
