Raja Mehmudabad Hazratganj properties
THE DISTRICT administration here has served an ultimatum to the 57 tenants occupying the enemy property of the Raja of Mehmudabad to vacate their respective premises by August 16.
The move comes in the wake of a contempt of court petition filed by the erstwhile Raja of Mehmudabad Mohd Amir Mohd Khan in the Supreme Court for non-compliance of its order by the Custodian of Enemy Property in Mumbai. In its order dated August 7, the Supreme Court pulled up the Custodian for not complying with the order passed by it in the matter on October 21, 2005.
Following the reprimand, the Custodian wrote to the district magistrate stating that the possession of all properties has to be handed over to the scion of the Mehmudabad irrespective of the fact whether those occupying it were post or pre September 10, 1965 tenants. “We have made it clear to the tenants that under the circumstances any relief in the matter now could only be provided either by the Raja himself or the courts,” said an administration official.

Among the prominent post 1965 tenants are the Capoor Hotel, Kohli Brothers and the Royal Café restaurant in Hazratganj.

{{/usCountry}}While the possession of properties under government occupation like the Butler Palace have already been hand over to the Raja, the authorities had sought clear-cut instructions from the Custodian on those under the occupation of private individuals. On June 16, Custodian Dinesh Singh wrote back that to the extent possible all enemy properties allotted after September 10, 1965 should be vacated and handed over to the scion of the Mehmudabad.
Among the shops/premises in Mehmudabad Mansion in Hazratganj that have been served notices in this connection are the Fairdeal Agencies, Sharma Associates, Remington Typewriter shop, Kalpatru Hall, Secretary, International Vidyapeeth, the two showrooms of Ganga Corporation, UP Asbestos, Savitri Devi and Rukmani Devi. Likewise, those in the Lawrie Building, also part of the Mehmudabad Estate, include Mahatech Handloom, Modern Book Stall, Bansal and Sons, Ghanshyam Opticals, Prakash Makhija, Pantaloon Shop, KC Sweets, Lucknow Chikan Palace, Anu Advertising and Messrs Keshav House.
A. Sons in Hazratganj and MA Durga too have been asked to vacate their premises within a week.
