"Unlike on earlier occasions, I cannot participate in the October 13 Assembly poll campaign owing to ill health and I am pained that I cannot be amidst you," Vajpayee wrote in a letter, published as an advertisement by Sena-BJP in leading newspapers in the state on Saturday.

"I appeal to all of you to vote for Sena-BJP for ushering in a new Maharashtra which is free from hunger, employment and appeasement," he said.

Meanwhile, Congress has objected to the advertisement, saying it carries the national emblem. "We will file a complaint of poll code violation with election authorities," MPCC spokesperson Husain Dalwai said.
