MAJORITY OF universities and degree colleges advocated a greater involvement of meritorious students in the students’ union polls before the Lyngdoh committee.
They recommended fixing eligibility criteria and age-limit for contesting students, like attendance and marks.
Sources said LU V-C RP Singh strongly advocated for indirect election. This, he said, will help keep rowdy student leaders at bay while the meritorious and studious students will come forward and take part in the students’ union poll actively. He also felt that there was no harm in incorporating meritorious students in policy and decision making body. “But under the existing system, it is a distant dream,” the V-C said.
LU dean student welfare and former students’ union election officer BKPN Singh suggested the committee to put age limit and minimum qualification. He regretted that contemporary student leaders had political connections and their political bosses do patronise them. “Under such situation university administration struggles to initiate action against them. Their bosses mount pressure on the administration not to initiate any disciplinary action,” he said.

They said that retired judges be entrusted with the task to monitor the activities of the students’ union and keep a tab of their election. They advocated for the representation of the girl students so that they can also air their grievances and address the specific problems confronting the girl students on the campus. Only SP student wing was against putting age limit on the candidates.

{{/usCountry}}Gorapkhpur University suggested that there be class wise representatives instead of student union. Few colleges at Meerut suggested that minimum qualification for contesting poll be made second division while their office hours be fixed. Teachers of Jai Narain PG College suggested that NCC and NSS volunteers be given more weightage at the student union poll while there be a representatives of disabled students as well.
Several students of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow demanded that student union should be free form the nexus of political parties and gender equity be maintained in the representation of the student union.
When asked whether the Lyngdoh Committee is aware about the use of arms and fire weapons in the student union poll, an official on behalf of the committee told the press that committee had done its home work and is aware of each and every development taking place in the student politics.
