The government has allocated over Rs12.19 crore to implement the vegetable initiative for urban clusters under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna during 2011-12.

The initiative would set in motion a virtuous cycle of production and income for farmers and assured supply to consumers, a spokesperson of the state horticulture department said here on Tuesday.

Apart from Gurgaon, the other districts to be covered under the first phase of the scheme are Mewat, Rewari, Palwal, Faridabad, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Panipat, Rohtak, Karnal and Kurukshetra, he said.

He said that the main activities to be taken up under this scheme were formation of farmers' groups, providing assistance for growing vegetables of hybrid and open pollinated crops in open as well as under poly houses and assistance for all inputs through farmers' groups.

A total of 250 farmer groups will be formed. Each group will have 15-20 members.
