VEHICLE THEFT, loot and dacoities increased while other crime showed a decline on a year-to-year basis, according to the annual crime statistics in the Indore district for the year 2006 released on Tuesday.
While last year 1,512 vehicles were stolen, this year 2,017 vehicles, most of them two-wheelers were stolen. In real terms this means that every day between 5 to 6 vehicles got stolen. And with only around 30 per cent of the stolen vehicles getting recovered, it appears that vehicle thieves are having a field day.
SP Anshuman Yadav, while releasing the annual crime figures here on Tuesday agreed that the police would have to undertake a detailed analysis to check the rising cases of vehicle theft in the district.
He said that newer gangs were stealing vehicles and many of them did not even have previous records, while the police were still concentrating on traditional vehicle thieves like the Kanjars. Moreover, he said there was a large floating population in the city that made the task of the police more difficult.

In the case of body offences, the number of murders came down from 103 in 2005 to 81 in 2006 as did the attempted murder cases from 137 in 2005 to 124 in 2006, rape from 102 in 2005 to 89 in 2006, kidnapping from 57 in 2005 to 41 in 2006, and chain snatching from 22 in 2005 to 14 in 2006.

{{/usCountry}}Over all the number of cases under IPC increased marginally from 16,026 to 16,127. Asked whether he was alarmed by the fact that in the NCRB report, Indore came top in the number of crimes registered in the State, he said that it was easy to suppress registration, but that ultimately reflected in the number of heinous offences.
Speaking on the challenges police faced this year, Yadav said that the rampage by the Bangladeshi gangs was the most important challenge that the Indore police faced and they had succeeded in nabbing the culprits.
