Newly-appointed chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar is not in favour of frequent changes in the batting order and feels that every batsman has a slot which should be maintained.

Vengsarkar, who took over the hot seat from the controversial Kiran More a week ago, said his top priority will be to select the team strictly on merit and not allow zonal bias to interfere in the process.

"I think every batsman has a slot in the team. Those who are openers, should be asked to open the innings. Those who are in the middle order, should be in the middle order. I think the first four batsmen should have the same batting order," Vengsarkar said.

On how he was planning to contribute to Indian cricket, the former captain said "first and formost, I will go strictly on merit. I will not go on zonal bias, definitely no. I will pick the best Indian team".

Vengsarkar also said that the door was open for former captain Sourav Ganguly to stage a comeback to the national team by performing consistently at the domestic level.

"Yes surely, If he (Ganguly) plays first class and scores well. Everybody stands a chance to come in the team because I will go strictly according to the performance of the player", he said.
