Former India cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s attempt to become president of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) is likely to be unsuccessful given incumbent, VK Verma’s, claims of backing prior to the Annual General Meeting on Sunday.
“I have the support of nearly all the 34 voting units. All the delegates attending the elections are set to elect me unanimously,” Verma said. Earlier, the former cricketer’s bid to unseat Verma had received a setback after an Andhra Pradesh court refused to give a stay on the elections.
Azharuddin, on the other hand, questioned Verma’s eligibility for re-election. “He is bound by government restrictions on tenures. I know that 30 out of the 35 voting units are aggrieved by Verma's open defiance of government guidelines."
