They believe that the conviction of Singh, son of former IPS officer Prem Singh, who was acquitted in the rape and murder case by a lower court seven years ago, has been brought to justice mainly because of the public outcry helped by media campaign.

"Finally justice has been delivered," said 71-year-old Chaman Lal Mattoo, who led a single-handed campaign with help from friends and media, in his reaction from Himachal Pradesh.

"I can't express myself. I have no words to express how I feel... Justice has been done. Common people in the country can now breathe with ease. This is a step in the right direction," he added.

Indu Jalali, a childhood friend of Priyadarshini, said the "verdict is a victory of the Indian Judicial System, the entire media and the entire nation who stood behind us in this fight against injustice."
