THE FATEHPUR police have finally admitted that Vidyawati didn’t commit suicide. She was thrown on the funeral pyre of her husband.
After maintaining for most part of Saturday that there was no evidence to prove that Vidyawati was thrown on the funeral pyre of her husband, Lakhanlal, the cops in a hurried about turn registered a case under section 302 of the IPC against Lakhanlal’s three brothers, Ram Vishal, Kartar and Prem Lal. While the first two have already been arrested by the Bhindki police, Prem Lal is still at large.
“They along with 200 villagers were earlier charged under section 306. But those were preliminary findings. Now, on the basis of circumstantial evidence, we have charged the brothers under 302 and the villagers under section 201, abetting crime,” said VB Singh, superintendent of police, Fatehpur.
The State Women’s Commission team that had visited Rari Khurd village where the shocking incident had taken place too had said that it appeared to be a case of murder than suicide.
Inspector Bhindki, Siraj Ahmad Khan told HT that Vidyawati’s daughters—Arti and Puja—who are key witnesses of the gory incident and who had gone missing immediately after the incident, too are expected to be traced soon. “We know that they are safe. We would trace them soon,” Khan said.
Meanwhile the Fatehpur police arrested Rohit, the insurance agent who along with Vidyawati allegedly conspired to kill Lakhan Lal. The insurance with a risk coverage of Rs 10 lakh that Rohit had persuaded Lakhan Lal to take is now a very vital clue that links Rohit with Lal’s murder.

{{/usCountry}}Incensed villagers had apparently subjected Vidyawati to both mental and physical torture after the recovery of Lakhan Lal’s body and it is widely suspected that the villagers along with Lakhan Lal’s brothers forced Vidyawati to jump on the funeral pyre of her husband.
Rohit too has told the police that Vidyawati’s daughters had called him up after the incident and told him that their mother was forced to die for her sins by the villagers as well as Lakhan Lal’s relatives.
