Transport and sports minister Madan Mitra, arrested in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam, was moved to a ward in Alipore central jail’s prison hospital after being discharged from SSKM Hospital.

Senior officials at the jail greeted Mitra with a cup of tea and snacks after he reached the prison escorted by police personnel.

It also came to light that four inmates were running errands for Mitra, from providing him with a new mattress and pillow to ensuring his food was served in new crockery. He was also provided curtains for privacy and was served a specially cooked lunch.

Sources said a special cell was being readied for Mitra and that he would be shifted there soon. After being served tea, Mitra had complained of breathlessness and the jail doctor advised he be shifted to the jail hospital immediately. Other sick inmates were allegedly discharged or moved out of their wards to accommodate Mitra.

The Opposition raised the issue of Mitra being admitted to the jail hospital after SSKM Hospital declared he was fit for trial.
