The Union home ministry has issued orders for SS Virk’s premature repatriation to his cadre, Maharashtra, a Union home ministry official said on Wednesday. Virk is a 1970 batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre and was in Punjab on inter-state deputation.

At one point in the running to head the Central Reserve Police Force and the Central Industrial Security Force, Virk was removed from the state DGP’s post on the Election Commission’s instructions ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls. He was then posted as director general of the Punjab Police Housing Development Corporation.

The police officer, who was considered close to former chief minister Amarinder Singh, had been in the firing line of the Akali Dal-led government. Virk was placed under suspension. He was charged of not informing the state government about a cheque issued for the purchase of land in a controversial land deal.

His repatriation order issued by the home ministry, however, do not refer to his suspension and describe him as the director general of the Punjab Police Housing Development Corporation.
