Virtues like love, sympathy and goodwill are the lights that never fade. Light never dies, it only changes its colour in the presence of other lights.

Darkness has no existence in the presence of light. When light come, it dies; but light never dies out. Similarly, hatred, enmity, avarice and sin stand nowhere near love, mercy and welfare.

Here is a lovely story on this, between a child and a tree. The child loved to go, every day, and play under the tree, in its shadow. Soon, they became good friends. The tree enjoyed the child’s company and they would talk for hours together.

And, this spree of enjoyment continued for years. But soon, the child grew up. The greed for worldly materials started piling up in him. He started distancing himself from the tree. Very soon, their union dissipated.

The child was no longer eager to pass time with the tree. He was lost in worldly affairs. The tree was sad. “Where were you, I love you, my friend?” said tree when the child was passing by. “I was busy in minting money, I have a family. What your love will give?” answered the now greedy child.

But the child had the same “busy in worldly affair” answer. The tree then sacrificed its stump too, suggesting to build a boat out of it, and sail abroad. The child’s greediness compelled him to accept the offer. Soon, he was sailing in the middle of the sea and the tree worrying about him all the time.

True friendship and true sacrifice, indeed. Love never fades away, and seeks no rewards too.
