Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday charged the BJP with bringing the country on the brink of collapse and asked people to cast ballots in favour of her party to ensure nation's development.

Forces which had played no role in the freedom movement were now undermining those values, which had brought independence to the country, she told an election rally at Iglas, some 20 kms from Aligarh.
The foundation of the constitution was based on pluralism and Hindu-Muslim unity was a basic ingredient of this, Gandhi said.
She said ever since the BJP came to power there had been a systematic attempt to create fissures in society.
Referring to Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said it was the heart of the country but unfortunately development work there had come to a standstill.
She said farmers were given a raw deal during the BJP rule and pointed out a large number of sugar mills in the state were on the verge of closure.
The Congress President said the famous lock industry here was facing crisis and several units had shut during the past few years.
