‘Vote for an MLA, get an MP free’

If Sidhu is here, ‘Sidhuisms’ can’t be far behind. Appealing to residents of the Amritsar (East) constituency to vote for his wife in the January 30 assembly polls, BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu puts it like only he can: “Is nu jita deyo, te vekho pher MLA de naal MP free (Make her win and you will get an MP free with an MLA).” Aseem Bassi reports.

Appealing to residents of the Amritsar (East) constituency to vote for his wife in the January 30 assembly polls, BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu puts it like only he can: “Is nu jita deyo, te vekho pher MLA de naal MP free (Make her win and you will get an MP free with an MLA).”

Whistles and loud claps follow.

After making sure that his wife, who shares his first name, got a party ticket for the elections, the cricketer-turned-politician is working hard to ensure she opens here innings in the state assembly.

While audiences listen patiently to the soft-spoken Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the noisiest applause his reserved for her husband’s quirky — but original — one-liners.

Kaur, who quit her doctor’s job in the Punjab health department to join her husband in the political crease, focuses on civic issues while interacting with the voters of the constituency, which was formed after delimitation. But when the three-time MP from Amritsar holds the mike, she can’t help but smile.

He, however, mixes his puns with more direct appeals.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is the BJP’s campaign-in-charge in Punjab, likes to remind people that an MP-MLA husband-wife team can do wonders for the constituency. Looking at the people’s response, it is no surprise that the former Indian opener is the party’s star campaigner.
