With reference to the editorial Dark clouds of uncertainty (Our Take, June 20), it is sad that though the monsoon and the subsequent floods are an annual occurrence, the authorities are unprepared to tackle them. In cities like Delhi and Mumbai all the tall claims of being fully-prepared for the monsoon fall flat after a few hours of rain leading to water-logging and roads caving in. Besides a monsoon contingency plan, the authorities need to come up with early warning systems that will ensure timely evacuations from areas likely to be affected.

No benefit for the aam aadmi
With reference to the editorial The countdown has just begun (Our Take, June 18), with its major thrust on appeasing a handful of politicians, it is not certain whether the recent Cabinet reshuffle will help improve the future performance of the government or not. It seems to be an attempt to give more ministerial berths to states with impending elections in order to woo the voters. As a result a proper performance appraisal has not been done. However, such actions only drive political interests and are not beneficial to the common man.

Politics complicated, Y2K simple
With reference to Ajaz Ashraf’s article This is not the sum of all our fears (June 19), it is true that Modi’s popularity is limited. However, it is preposterous to say that Modi’s chances of becoming the PM are curtailed due to the limited reach of the BJP. Ashraf has established an interesting link between Modi and the Y2K challenge. This comparison is not apt as issues such as development, Hindutva and Modi’s leadership are far more complicated than an issue entailing simple technical assumptions.
