Sitaram Yechury in his article Nothing on their plates (Left Hand Drive, June 18) rightly states that an effective and transparent implementation of the public distribution system (PDS) could be an alternative to the much-awaited National Food Security Bill.
Given that the welfare of one section should not be at the cost of another, it is imperative for our policy-makers to ensure the security of farmers through policies like the minimum support price.
Besides this, the government should also focus on the upgradation of education and health facilities for the development of human resource so as to further the goal of food security. The government should also make employment generation a priority.

The victory of moderate cleric Hasan Rouhani in Iran’s presidential elections is good news for the country (Grasp the nettle, June 17). Besides dealing with a flailing economy, he must ensure that the country’s nuclear process is transparent.
He must also work towards improving the deep historical and cultural relations between India and Iran.
