Punishment, along with awareness, will reduce crime in society
With reference to Vir Sanghvi’s Reap the whirlwind (September 19), ideally the punishment should be equal to the crime. A prison sentence is of little effect as many convicts find themselves at home in prisons and thus the purpose of a prison term is lost. The increase in the number of crimes and criminals is proof that the delivery of justice has failed. However, punishments alone are not going to help. This should be complemented by campaigns against all vices, a thrust on moral education and social awareness. Fear of God, fear of law and fear of society are the three essential ingredients for maintaining peace and order.

Nawaz Sharif will not be able to mend ties with India
This is with reference to Shayam Saran’s A Hamletian dilemma (September 18). Nawaz Sharif has hardly taken any steps to eradicate the large number of jihadi groups operating from Pakistan. Today, Pakistan is facing a serious threat from within as radical Islamic schools of thought have gained ground in the country. While these groups were initially promoted by the State, today they have taken control of the system in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif knows that he has to address this majority in his country and so to expect him to make any progressive move to improve ties with India is foolish. Till this state of affairs continues India will always be an enemy for Pakistan.
