Anna's got the upper hand while the govt's played the losing hand
With reference to Samar Halarnkar's article I am not Anna Hazare (Maha Bharat, August 18), the UPA government not only failed miserably in managing the crisis but also allowed the Opposition to gain the upper hand. Anna Hazare and his team won a psychological battle, putting the Congress in a tight spot. In order to salvage some dignity, the UPA should now work to ensure that all pending bills see the light of the day.

Let's name our honest leaders
Rajdeep Sardesai must be congratulated for his positive attitude though he does not sound very confident (Our freedom song, Beyond the Bite, August 12). Corruption among politicians and bureaucrats is a serious problem and should be addressed now. The country will not collapse if we initiate some meaningful measures. No one with a criminal record should be allowed to contest elections and corrupt big-wigs must be brought to trial.

Sardesai's analysis sounds like a pep talk by a veteran journalist who wants the readers to look at the glass as half full rather than half empty. Given the lack of trust in our politicians, people have every reason to be cynical. Sardesai mentions that for every neta out to make a quick buck, there will be one working tirelessly. Could he possibly name a few for us?
