The rival parties cannot exploit internal rifts within the BJP
With senior BJP leader LK Advani giving his support to the party’s PM candidate and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, it will be hard for the rival parties to exploit the internal rifts within the BJP (I will be elated if Modi becomes PM, says Advani, October 17).
Right from the time of his selection at the Goa meet, Modi has been riding a wave of popular support, with people reposing faith in him in the hopes he can recreate the Gujarat model throughout India. Modi, and the BJP, are just filling the leadership vacuum that the Congress-led UPA has created.
At a time when the nation is facing a lot of problems, people need a strong leader and no one from the Congress is able to take up the challenge.

Only awareness campaigns can help stop the abuse of children
With reference to An end to childhood (Our Take, October 17), why should we expect politicians to address the problem of child marriage and exploitation when these politicians are also a part of the society that practises such evils?
Politicians will not do anything that will upset their vote-banks. Organisations should conduct campaigns detailing the negative aspects of such trends and the awareness thus created will help in protecting children. It is surprising that women’s groups have not taken up this cause in a more focused way. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 is of no use if it is not enforced strictly.

Globalisation is good as it brings in efficiency and cuts unnecessary costs
Ashok Kothari in Minimise the domino effect (October 17) fails to see the larger picture. Globalisation is not as bad as it is being projected. The problem comes in when the local environment is not tuned or upgraded to match that of the outside world.
Integration is the way the world is moving and shutting ourselves from the outside world is not a step in the right direction. In the case of the blackout in Andhra Pradesh, centralising the power grid was not a bad thing; the strike that led to the blackout was bad.
The law and order machinery was not in place to check such a blackout. Streamlining or centralising cuts unnecessary costs and fine-tunes the system thereby making it more efficient and cost-effective.
