Rape is not unique to Haryana or due to its poor sex ratio
This refers to the editorial A perilous existence (October 9). Though the recent spate of rape cases in Haryana has made people sit up and take notice of the issue, it’s not a new phenomenon and certainly not restricted to Haryana. It’s also wrong to link the increasing number of rape cases being reported in Haryana with the state’s poor sex ratio.

Such people are in short supply
I agree with Gopalkrishna Gandhi that Lakshmimalla Singhvi was one of the few people who had access to powerful people across the political divides of India (India’s Vibgyor man, Incidentally, October 6). Singhvi was a Gandhian and will always be remembered as being one of the most successful Indian high commissioners in London. From Gandhi’s description, it appears that Singhvi was good at multi-tasking and enjoyed life to the fullest. It’s true that he was among the very few people who thought of and spoke for the country as a whole. Sadly, it’s equally true that such people have been marginalised today. Let’s hope that Gandhi’s article reminds today’s politicians and bureaucrats of their responsibilities towards the country.
