There’s hardly any comparison between Modi and Singh
The editorial Change gears on the road to Delhi (Our Take, September 16) rightly states that Narendra Modi and the BJP should now work towards framing inclusive policies. However, it seems both Modi and the BJP are least bothered about spelling out their developmental policies because they know that in India often personality and not policy, determines election results. Modi may be good at exploiting social media for his benefit and he is a better orator than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, but he lacks the latter’s elegance. The poise that Singh displayed amid criticism regarding the economic crisis is unmatchable. It’s to be noted that there’s hardly any comparison between the two leaders.

Only a change in patriarchal mindset can end gender violence
With reference to the editorial Death sentence is not a panacea (Our Take, September 14), after a nine-month-long trial, the fast track court’s decision to hand down death penalty to all the four convicts in the December 16 gang rape and murder case has reinforced the common man’s faith in the judiciary. However, the death sentence in this particular case will not end sexual violence in India as those who commit crimes do not expect to be caught and many cases of rape and other forms of sexual violence go unreported because of the stigma and trauma associated them. Often police apathy prolongs a survivor’s trauma. Little is going to change until we, as a society, change our patriarchal and sexist mindset.
