Our education system is a study in apathy on women's equality
This refers to Namita Bhandare's article Let's abort our biases (Another Day, October 29). Allowing religious institutions to continue with their gender-biased education perpetuates crimes against women. The secular education system in the country should be empowered to instil liberal values in society, so that a woman is not considered inferior in any way to a man.

I agree with Bhandare's views that we should not depend on legislation alone to improve the status of women. Our present educational system is efficient in producing engineers, doctors, professors, bureaucrats and scientists, but fails to impart important lessons in human values, ethics, integrity and moral character.

Judging by their judgement
With reference to Soli Sorabjee's article Age is just a number (October 29), the only way of maintaining integrity in our judicial system is by denying judges of the high courts and Supreme Court any appointment after their retirement. The concept of a cooling off period is not likely to make a difference. If a judge gets a lucrative post-retirement position, the public will always question the motive behind such appointments.

Justice should never be measured by age. Retired Supreme Court judges have a subtle sense of arbitration and there is no reason why we should not benefit from their experience. Their advice on vexed issues should be sought to ensure justice for people.
