Mayawati has to keep her powder dry, any hasty move will backfire
The editorial Going against her own grain (Our Take, October 12) rightly states that BSP chief Mayawati must cover lost ground in Uttar Pradesh instead of chasing ambitions that will fetch her nothing politically. She must realise that at this juncture she cannot afford to be a bargainer for two reasons. First, the UPA government has proved that it can survive without the Trinamool Congress. Second, the anti-Mayawati wave in Uttar Pradesh is far from over. Any political misadventure will cost her dearly, and, therefore, she must adopt a wait-and-watch policy.

Don't take public anger lightly
This refers to the editorial The air cover's no longer there (Our Take, October 16). It is true that whether we agree or not with Arvind Kejriwal's brand of politics, one cannot ignore the groundswell of public anger against corruption. Political parties must acknowledge that there is an anti-politician sentiment that is growing. If the UPA government wants to come to power again, it must stop taking public anger lightly and start working to address it through legislative and administrative measures.

Hygiene's going down the drain
This refers to the report Banks aplenty, toilets few (October 15). It is a matter of national shame and anguish that we Indians have better access to banks than toilets. Making basic amenities available to the masses has never been a priority for the government of the day, regardless of which political party is in power. It is high time policy-makers and activists worked towards making the country free from open defecation.
