We are all in it together in the fight against terror
This refers to the editorial It's a work in progress (Our Take, December 30). The nationwide red alert sounded by the government in the wake of possible terrorist attacks recently failed to make people realise the seriousness of the threats. Fighting terror is the responsibility of both the government and people. The former should take pre-emptive measures to avoid a terror attack and the latter should cooperate with the authorities. There is also a need to reform India's counter-terrorism capabilities by enacting new laws and upgrading military equipment.

Democracy is in the dock
Samar Halarnkar in The loyal, seditious Dr Sen (Big Picture, December 30) brings to light the altruistic side of Binayak Sen. The Raipur sessions court's ruling on Sen is unjustified. The verdict has rightly evoked widespread criticism across the globe. December 25, 2010, the day the Raipur court put Sen behind the bars for life, will forever be remembered as the day of the defeat of democracy in India.

It is distressing to see activists protesting against the Raipur court's ruling on Sen. They are forgetting that Sen has been duly tried in a court in a democracy and the court pronounced the judgement only after considering all available evidence. Criticising the court's ruling is demeaning the judicial system. Sen is free to take his case to a higher court and prove his innocence.

The sky is the limit
The success or failure of a space mission depends on many factors. The probability of successfully launching a satellite can't be predicted. That's the reason not too many people are criticising the recent failure of the GSLV satellite. The scientists must focus on rectifying technical snags. More than Chandrayaan, India needs more space projects that improve our communication network facility. Chandrayaan can only fetch data already available with Nasa or
similar agencies.

Not welcome at the table
The editorial Morality play (The Pundit, December 31) rightly points out that while some immoral acts may not be illegal, they can harm society. The splurging of money by BJP president Nitin Gadkari on his son's wedding recently may not be illegal. But it was an immoral act, as the money could have been used to provide nutritious food to children, destitute and the poor who are the worst victims of malnutrition.
