Former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee on Wednesday dismissed as "ludicrous" Jan Morcha leader VP Singh's claim in his memoirs that the former was unhappy with the BJP and contemplating quitting the party in 1987.
"I was surprised to read some excerpts of VP Singh's book 'Manzil Se Zyada Safar'... His assertion that I was unhappy with the BJP is not only far from the truth but also ludicrous," he said.
Vajpayee also refuted Singh's claim that he had advised him to move ahead with some chosen people to form a political party after he resigned from the Congress. "No such conversation took place with me," he stressed.
The BJP leader said he was clarifying the issue as Singh's contentions in the book were likely to create wrong impressions and he wanted to dispel such notions.
In the book, Singh talks about the proposal of some select leaders coming together to form a new party to take on the Congress. BS Shekhawat and Jaswant Singh endorsed the idea, he said.
Vajpayee supported the idea and had met him once in this regard, Singh said. “I thought this meant that if some people come together to form a party, how can they remain in their own party,” Singh says in the book.
