Whenever you see a star, please pray for me,
For on a lonely journey, I will be.
Pray for my family, and pray for my home
Help them to remember that they’re never alone……

IT WAS a sad day for the men in olive green as the news of Lt Col Pankaj Jha’s suicide trickled in. Lt Col Jha was a bright officer in the Indian army. It is really sad that such incidents continue to happen.

A fresh debate sparks off every time such an incident takes place but instead of playing the blame game we need to seriously ponder over the entire issue. There is something wrong somewhere that calls for immediate remedial measures.

My heart goes out for the Jha family for whom none of the debates matter. The local media has squarely blamed the Indian army. But I request them to wait for the facts to come out before accusing anyone.

Experts say harsh and dangerous living conditions combined with long deployment can worsen existing depression. And easy access to weapons in a war zone can quickly turn a passing thought into action.

No matter how he died or what happened, he still deserves respect and honour. We as mature residents of Bhopal can at least give Lt Col Jha’s family respite from rumours and show the respect and privacy they deserve.
