Globally, humanity is engulfed in strife and violence. It makes one yearn for an era of everlasting peace and justice. This is not without any rationale – all men by nature are peace loving and advocate justice. This explains why we are pained by violence even though we may not be directly affected by it.

Interestingly, an era of universal peace is one that all divine religions commit to. Hinduism talks about the return of Kalki in the last era and Christianity of the Messiah. While Zoroastriasm looks forward to Saoshyant, Islam awaits the reappearance of the Mahdi. Each of these is introduced as the one who will usher in an era of everlasting peace and security.

Sample this quotation from Hindu scriptures – “This incarnation of Vishnu is to appear at the end of Kali or Iron Age, seated on a white horse, with a drawn sword blazing like a comet, for the final destruction of the wicked and the restoration of purity”. Or this Quranic one: “God promises those of you who believe and do right that He will give them the succession in the earth as He gave the succession to those before them, and He will establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and to give them, after their fear, safety in exchange”.

Another common thread is that the era preceding the advent of the Promised One will be characterized by violence, destruction and injustice. Mankind will despair and anxiously seek the advent of the ‘Awaited Savior’.
