15,000-strong police force to ensure fair poll
MORE THAN 15,000 policemen, including home guards, PAC, RAF, and the SSB, have been deployed in the city to ensure a free and fair poll. Nearly 200 mobile police parties would patrol in their assigned areas to prevent any untoward incident.
While no public transport would be allowed during the poll, district administration has instructed the police to check all vehicles carrying voters. Around 100 barriers have been put in the city for the purpose. Only vehicles, which have special passes issued by the district administration, would be exempted from the inspection.
The election nodal officer and SP Traffic informed Hindustan Times that around 5000 personnel from the civil police, besides the 9000 home guards to assist them, have been deployed to maintain law and order. Four companies of the PAC would man sensitive booths, while the SSB would be deployed as an extra force at hypersensitive booths.
24 DSPs, five additional SPs, along with more than 100 gazetted officers, would coordinate movement of the force on the polling day. The city has been divided into five super zones and 22 zones to keep a close watch on 110 sectors having 1689 polling booths.
Out of the 1689 booths in the city, only 293 were declared general. 639 of these were sensitive while 757 came under the hypersensitive category. Among the hypersensitive booths, 32 have a previous history of violence during all civic elections. “ The administration has decided to deploy paramilitary force on these booths along with the PAC and civil police to ensure a peaceful poll,” said Rakesh Singh, nodal police officer for the election.
