How many times have you dreamt of walking on clouds? Imagine going across a glass bridge 10,000 feet above sea level and feeling the ranges and rivers below your feet?
With the Sikkim government planning the world’s highest skywalk, you needn’t visit the Grand Canyon to realise this dream.
Taking a cue from the skywalk at the Grand Canyon, the Sikkim government is planning an ambitious skywalk project of its own atop Bhaley Dhunga mountain cliff, to woo tourists.
The proposed skywalk bridge, which will be the highest in the world, will stand at 10,102 feet, connected by a ropeway from Yanggang in south Sikkim, 56 kilometres from Gangtok.
The skywalk, made of steel and glass, will be 40 feet long. From its tip, people will get a breathtaking view of the vertical drop at Bhaley Dunga cliff.
Ram Bahadur Subba, state Tourism minister, told Hindustan Times that tenders have been floated a month back and South African multinational company Grant Thornton has shown interest. “They would submit their feasibility report and financial estimates by next month,” he said.
The sky walk at Grand Canyon was launched in March 2007. Its walkway extends 70 feet from the rim. At its tip, the visitor is suspended in space, looking down to the Colorado River on the canyon floor 4000 feet below.
