UNEXPECTED RISE in the maximum and minimum temperatures has come as a relief for people in some parts of the State.
This has put a stop to the deaths reported due to severe cold in eastern UP. More than three-dozen people reportedly succumbed to the cold this winter.
While the days are warm, there is a considerable downfall in the temperature at night.
According to the meteorological department, the maximum day temperature was recorded at 30 degree Celsius in Varanasi on Thursday while the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 9.2 degree Celsius and 6.8 degree Celsius on Wednesday and Tuesday respectively.
Contrary to this, a couple of days earlier, the highest maximum temperature was recorded at 25 degree Celsius on January 1 while the minimum temperature was between 6 degree and 13 degree Celsius. The highest minimum temperature was recorded at 13.7 degree Celsius on January 2.
Eminent meteorologist Prof BRD Gupta said the absence of western disturbance was the main cause of rise in the maximum temperature for the last few days in eastern UP.
“The western disturbance is not passing over this region, therefore, there is a persistent rise in the temperature,” he said, adding that western disturbance usually passed over this region five times in January, but this year, it passed only once in the first week of January.
