In good news for flood-affected areas of Haryana and Delhi, the Haryana government on Wednesday said water inflow at Hathni Kund barrage near Yamunanagar has been reduced and the water level in the Yamuna has started falling.
“The inflow of water at the barrage was reduced to at 77,919 cusec at 4 pm on Wednesday. The water level is decreasing gradually,” said Makrand K Panurang, the Yamunanagar, deputy commissioner.
Several low-lying areas along the Yamuna in Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat and parts of the national capital Delhi had witnessed flooding since Sunday after widespread rainfall was reported in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and plains of Haryana in the last week.
On Tuesday, the water level in the Yamuna was recorded at 8.06 lakh cusecs at the Hathni Kund barrage, which receded to 1.14 lakh cusecs. Due to discontinuation of rains in the catchment areas of the Yamuna and other seasonal rivulets, the water level dipped to below 78,000 cusecs on Wednesday.
People living close to the river bank were evacuated and shifted to camps set up in safer areas.
Meanwhile, teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Bathinda undertook relief operations at Japti Chhapra, Nagli, Khukhni and other villages of Indri subdivision in Karnal on Wednesday.

Besides the distribution of food packets, the teams of doctors provided medical help to the needy residents and domestic animals.
Deputy commissioner (DC) Renu S Phulia said the low-lying villages, which were reportedly cut off due to the inundated roads were accessible by boats and tractors.
She said joint efforts had been made to rescue any stranded villager on the Yamuna bank and to provide relief to the affected population.
