WB: Youth held for rape attempt on blind girl

A 19-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a blind girl at Purbasthali village of Nasratpur's Dangapara area in Burdwan, West Bengal the police said today.

A 19-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a blind girl at Purbasthali village of Nasratpur's Dangapara area in Burdwan, West Bengal the police said on Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday evening when the 14-year-old blind girl was alone. The accused, identified as Chottu Sheikh, taking advantage of her helplessness, allegedly barged into the house and tried to rape her, the police said.

Hearing the girl screaming, her mother and sister, who went to attend a function in the neighbourhood, rushed to the house when Chottu fled the scene, the girl's father alleged in the FIR.

Chottu was arrested on Monday morning and was taken to the Kalka SDJM court where police asked for a five-day custody.

The girl is a student of a blind school in Nabadwip. She had come home on Saturday to spend her Saraswati Puja holidays.
