'We are committed to Singur's development'

Tata Motors is committed to the people of Singur and their development, said the firm's managing director.

Tata Motors is committed to the people of Singur and their development, said the firm's managing director even as Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee continued her fast for the twelfth day on Friday protesting the company's upcoming small car project in the region.

"We are committed to Singur, we are committed to the development of the area and the well-being of the people on whose land the factory will come up. We have thought of many things to ensure that," Tata Motors managing director Ravi Kant told Bengali news channel Kolkata TV.

Banerjee, along with other social activists, has been protesting the acquisition of agricultural land by the Tata's for their project at Singur, about 60 kms from Kolkata.

Ravi Kant made it clear that the Tata Motors would not back out of the project and was committed to roll out the car by mid 2008.

Terming the developments over Singur as "very unfortunate", he said: "We thought that we are coming to a constituency where the leader of that constituency — whosoever — would be very happy that something was being done to create major employment for the people."

Former prime minister VP Singh arrived in Kolkata on Friday and met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and discussed the Singur issue. He also called upon Mamata Banerjee, who is on fast.
