They are the masters of Bollywood thrillers. Director duo Abbas-Mustan is ready with its latest film, Naqaab, starring Akshaye Khanna, Bobby Deol and Urvashi Sharma. In a telephonic chat with HT City, Abbas talks about the film and the duo’s love for thrillers.

Abbas and Mustan love thrillers, don’t they?
Of course, when we meet people they all say that we should only make thrillers. They tell us that they are used to watching films of other genres from other directors, but only expect thrillers from us. We, too, enjoy thrillers. We want to make different types to avoid repetition but, no matter what, the thrill element has to be there.

The strong suspense that you had created with the film Khiladi has been missing subsequently…
It depends on the plot. In a murder mystery, the format is such that after a few minutes there is a major twist and the anticipation is maintained.

Doesn’t Naqaab sound similar to Humraaz?
It does, because it also has two heroes and one heroine. The heroes are the same. The only new factor is the leading lady — Urvashi Sharma. However, the plot is entirely different.

In Naqaab, the girl is committed to marrying a rich boy but falls for another man. Naqaab means mask. All three characters have a hidden past. It was a challenge to make it different from Humraaz, as viewers musn’t be let down.

What is the secret behind Abbas-Mustan’s success?
It is just that we work with sincerity and conviction. We put in our best and the rest depends on the audience.
