FORMER PRIME Minister VP Singh said here on Thursday that when he had talked about Dadri, he was jailed. Now, he would make Kanpur into another Dadri, he added.

He also launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and accused him of grabbing the farmers’ land. Talking to mediapersons, Singh, who made a brief halt in the city on his way to Mahoba where a farmer had committed suicide, said, “The State Government is on a land-grabbing spree and after Dadri it is planning to acquire the land of farmers in Kanpur and Lucknow.”

In the name of development the State Government was acquiring fertile land of farmers but the Jan Morcha would not let it happen and Kanpur would be the next Dadri, Singh said.

“Kanpur ke kisan ki bhi ladai aab mein ladonga (Now, I will fight for the farmers of Kanpur, too),” Singh said and added that no one would be allowed to acquire the land of farmers of the district. Talking about the acquisition law, Singh said, “The land acquisition law that gives the State Government the unbridled power to acquire the land of farmers must be changed.”

Expressing his concern over the rising incidents of suicide by farmers of the Bundelkhand region, Singh sought a direct reply from Mulayam Singh Yadav holding him responsible for all the suicides. He said that during the past one year, 40 had committed suicide in the Bundelkhand region and the State Government remained a mute spectator.

“The CM should come up with a proper reply on the suicides by farmers,” he said. Commenting on the reasons for the suicides, Singh criticized the State Government for failing to discharge its duties.

The State Government failed to provide the farmers with electricity and diesel, Singh said and added besides, the farmers were not getting the proper price of their yield.

Singh also demanded that both the State and the Central governments must take immediate steps to waive the farmers’ loan.

Citing the example of Tamil Nadu, Singh asked: “When the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu can waive the cooperative loan of farmers within 24 hours of taking oath of office, why can’t the Mulayam-led government follow suit?.”
