This refers to the editorial Tighten the knot (February 16). In demanding that the government speed up the process of making registration of marriages compulsory, the Supreme Court has asserted itself where the executive and legislature have failed. It is the latter's responsibility to bring in any changes in law that will help empower women in our society. Suitable steps should be taken to make sure that registration of marriages becomes mandatory for all communities.

Poll pot

Mentioning an average upper figure of Rs 25 lakh per parliamentary constituency, Abhishek Singhvi wrongly calculates the total sum for 540 Lok Sabha seats to Rs 235 crore (Resourceful allocation, February 15). In fact, it amounts to Rs 135 crore. So, he's causing a loss of Rs 100 crore to the exchequer.

Also, the EC must impose restrictions in respect of selection of candidates, their educational qualification and criminal background so that public funds are not misused.
