Vijay (name changed) is haunted by the murderous and fatal attack on Saturday when he was returning to his village after attending a mahapanchayat.
He had gone to the mahapanchayat with some villagers to ask for justice for the family members of two persons who died violent deaths earlier.
Talking to HT, Vijay said most of the people at the panchayat were unarmed because a big panchayat-cum-condolence meeting had been concluded in village Nangla Mandore on August 31 at the same venue and no one was expecting that the panchayat held on September 7 would cause violence.
Secondly, the crowd attending the panchayat was sure about a peaceful conclusion because the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), a respected farmers’ organisation, was one of the organisers of the mahapanchayat. Vijay and his companions boarded an open tractor trolley and had travelled about 30 km from Nangla Mandore to village Pur Baliyaan.
“As our group was passing through the main road of the village, a sudden attack started from two sides,” said Vijay.
“From the roofs of the houses people started throwing bricks, while a group attacked us with lathis,” he added. The assault continued for 10-15 minutes. In this one died and about 12 people were injured, one of whom had been sent to Meerut in a very serious condition, he said.
