How serious are the policemen about Operation Talaash can be gauged from a recent instance within the Lucknow Police itself.

A constable, Lakshmi Narain, posted at the Chinhat Police Station and living there with his family, has been running from pillar to post to have his daughter traced. The son of another constable, posted at Vikas Nagar Police Station, in the city, had “abducted” the minor girl luring her for marriage.

Operation Talaash was focused on tracing girls who had either eloped or had been abducted. At the time of the launch of the Operation, the SSP had claimed that police teams would be constituted at every police station. Dr Goswami had said rescued girls would be allowed to stay with their partners if they expressed the desire to do so but minors would be handed over to their guardians. Both procedures would be conducted with due permission from the concerned court, the SSP had said.

Constable Narain had lodged an FIR on May 30 at his ‘own’ police station alleging that Deepak, son of constable Chunnilal, posted at the Vikas Nagar Police Station, had abducted his minor daughter. Narain had further alleged that he had asked Chunnilal about his daughter but Deepak’s father had threatened him with dire consequences if he pursued the case.

Though, a case was registered against Deepak and his father, no action was initiated by senior cops. The police team did not even conduct any raid to trace the girl or the named accused.

SSP Dr Goswami, however, suspended Chunnilal on Friday night. When asked, the SP (trans-Gomti) AK Singh said they were searching for the erring constable and his son.

On the other hand, when asked about the progress in Operation Talaash, the SSP said “possibly three girls had been recovered since the launch of the Operation.” When asked about the case involving the constable, all Dr Goswami had to say was that he had suspended the “erring” cop.
