DEAD AT Charbagh Railway Station have no place to ‘rest.’ Bodies wrapped in bloodstained-cloth with flies and insect whizzing on it at a parking slot is a common sight. Since the bodies are in the open they tend to catch the attention of passers-by, who often mistake it —as a person in an ‘act of inebriation.’

“Such a sight at police stations is not uncommon,” said the Additional Director General of Police (ADG) B K Bhalla. But the passers-by have something different to share. “Aren’t you scared seeing that blood –stained bodies,” said Anil Rastogi, and added, “It may be OK with the grown-ups, but what impression it must be creating on the minds of tender souls.”

The number of unclaimed bodies lying in the cycle or scooter stand is sometimes as many as three. Even the GRP has no place to keep the bodies away from the sight of the people. “What do we do, there is no place?” said a GRP man handling such cases. Sometimes the bodies lie for even days before they are finally transported to the mortuaries. The GRP gets Rs 500 for performing the last rites. “It’s only a year ago that the railways had increased the money from Rs 200 to Rs 500,” said a GRP jawan.

“Usually, I find a body or two lying in the parking slot,” said RP Singh, a railway employee who parks his vehicle in the slot. He suggested separate space for the purpose so that the passers-by, especially the children do not get scared or begin their journey on a sad note.

“The sight of body wrapped really puts one off,” said Mohd Sadiq, another railway employee. He further said that many people have tumbled upon the bodies, and have also decided to take up the issue with the senior GRP officials so that they provide a space for keeping bodies.

On being apprised about the situation, the ADG said that he would take up the issue with the senior railway officials and ask for a place to keep bodies.
