Have the guns fallen silent? The hub of Ulfa activity is strangely calm.
Unlike previous years, candidates have not been threatened, thanks to the Tarun Gogoi government's peace overtures to the Ulfa.
The banned outfit had helped the AGP in the 1996 election and sided with the Congress in 2001. Most of the Ulfa's top guns hail from this district. It has a violent history. Assam PWD minister Nagen Sarma was gunned down here by the Ulfa in February, 2000.
This is also the district which bears the infamy of secret killings. Several top rebel leaders and their families were allegedly killed by the government in a covert purge.
But this time, things are different. When Tarun Gogoi visited the district recently, he had an unusual guest.
The elderly father of Sasa Choudhuri, the "foreign secretary" of Ulfa, whose younger brother was done away by alleged governmentsponsored hitmen. And the message was peace.
