WHO confirms 5 human bird flu cases in Indonesia

The World Health Organisation has confirmed bird flu in five family members in North Sumatra.

The World Health Organisation has confirmed bird flu in five family members in North Sumatra, a senior health ministry official said on Wednesday.

Four of the five have died and samples from a further three people believed to be part of a family cluster of infections are still being tested. A health ministry official said earlier on Wednesday there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the Sumatra case.

The latest deaths bring the number of Indonesians who have died from bird flu to 29.
