NOW A microchip inserted in the stomach of cattle will check rampant corruption in fraudulent and repeated sale/purchase of the animal.
The newly developed microchip will also have all details and information about an animal, making it impossible to sell and resell, take repeated bank loans or make insurance claims on one and the same head.
Details of the chip will appear on the computer screen as soon as the animal stands before a scanner.
The State Government has decided to implement this unique scheme to check rampant corruption in selling, purchasing and loaning of milch animals, initially in Budaun and Meerut, after its success in Harayna and Delhi.
A survey has already been carried out in Budaun and Meerut with a thorough study of money spent on various projects introduced from time to time for increasing the number of cattle and milk production in the two districts.
Under the MLEWES System, developed by a Delhi-based company, an electronic microchip will be inserted into the stomach of an animal through a tube.
The cost of the 70-gram chip is around Rs 900 and it will be functional for a period of 18 years. The animal will be insured at a premium of 4.8 per cent of the purchase price of the animal.
All details about the animal as well as that of its owner will be there in the tamper-proof chip, including ID of the cattle financed, their owners, insurance records, health, breed, vaccination, reproduction, quality and quantity of milk or any other specific required information. It will assist officials to profile and target potential misuse/frauds associated with disbursal of loans and subsidies through the information available in the chip.

The system will be a boon in tracing stolen cattle as the real owner of the animal would be known within minutes by the details available on the microchip.
Earlier, the same cattle head was being sold and purchased repeatedly on paper under different schemes making a mockery of government efforts to increase milk production. As a result, there has not been desirable or expected growth in production of milk in the state even after spending crores of rupees.
The State Government had earlier experimented with branding sold/purchased cattle head but it failed. While branding was cruel, in many cases it was erased or tampered with.
The new system will also help in availing of compensation in case of natural calamities. For example, losses due to livestock getting drowned in the recent Mumbai floods was estimated to the tune of Rs 100 crore and the Government is in a fix as it had no mechanism or system to identify and quantify the actual losses which was possible only with the MLEWES System.
