THERE IS consternation among the cops in Indore following the news that two policemen of Bhopal - inspector Salim Khan and sub-inspector R M Shukla - have been recommended for out-of-turn-promotions for their role in cracking the recent dacoity cases in which Bangladeshis were involved.
What about us? Why is our role in solving the dacoity cases of Indore, in which the same Bangladeshi gangs were involved, being overlooked is the logical question being asked by the police officials who were closely involved in cracking those cases.
Why have the City cops who were recommended for out-of-turn promotions not been given their due? It may be recalled that Indore was a victim of these marauding gangs between December 2004 and February 2005, during which time they struck at seven places before being nabbed by Indore police with the help of Delhi Crime Branch.
Four Bangladeshis had been caught after months of painstaking investigation and after the success the police officials of Indore had moved the file for giving three persons – head constable Sanjay Bhadoria, head constable Vijendra Sharma and constable Santosh – out-of-turn-promotions for their role in cracking the case. The file is now gathering dust somewhere in the labyrinths of the PHQ in Bhopal.
A senior police officer, closely associated with the cases said that those recommended for out-of-turn promotions in Indore were equally deserving, if not more than their counterparts in Bhopal at present. “When the dacoities took place in Indore it was the first time in the history of the State that any Bangladeshi gangs had targeted it, so we knew nothing about them or their modus operandi. So the investigations were more painstaking.

Some officials here feel that since it is a matter involving Bhopal and the DGP himself sits there, these cases get more publicity and any success is quickly rewarded. “Otherwise, how does one explain the fact that even after solving such tricky kidnapping cases like the Baheti and Nagori cases, and mind it without paying one rupee in ransom, not one cop from Indore was given out-of-turn promotion,” an official wondered.
