Why splash so much cash for an ephemeral bash?

The editorial A scale of economy (The Pundit, March 3) aptly points out how extravagant weddings bode ill for society. Lalit Tanwar has, of course, put Punjabi weddings to shame by splurging crores of rupees. No one is bothered whether the money spent was earned through lawful means. It is ironical that the expenses involved futile and ephemeral ostentation that would be forgotten after the wedding.

Taint of a tainted Thomas

With reference to Paranjoy Guha Thakurta’s article Roughshod riders (March 4), the judgement of the Supreme Court in the CVC case is yet another slap on the face of the Congress-led UPA government. Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram should not only apologise to the nation but also explain their compulsions that led to the appointment of PJ Thomas as the CVC. The prime minister had earlier pleaded ignorance about the corruption cases against Thomas when BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had clearly brought attention to them.

Cashing in on the idea

With reference to Samar Halarnkar’s article The invisible hand (Maha Bharat, March 3), it is great that India too is thinking about the uplift of rural areas. Apart from providing money directly to the poor that they can utilise according to their needs, several schemes like providing education to children, clothes and other facilities will help the country join the league of developed nations.
