Discus thrower Poonia, 36, who hails from Hisar district of Haryana, married Virendar Singh Poonia, a hammer throw champion, of Gagarwas village in Churu district of Rajasthan in 2000.

Poonia had joined the Congress in Churu rally of Rahul Gandhi on October 23. She said: “I am practicing hard for the next Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. I have resigned from the job of north western railways recently and now I will devote my full time to play and politics.”

“I had a keen desire to serve people and my in-laws have supported me in this noble mission,” Poonia said.

“People have praised my decision of joining politics and the response is overwhelming,” she said.
She said: “More and more girls should join schools, colleges and universities because only education can empower them.”
