KANPURITES HEAVED a sign of relief following hour-long torrential rain lashing the city in the evening.
However, as usual, the downpour caused waterlogging in several parts of the city. With several city roads submerged in knee-deep water, commuters had a tough time in reaching their destinations.
Southern parts of the city, including the area under Juhi rail overbridge, Saket Nagar, the road in front of Deep Cinema, Fazalganj, Govind Nagar, Chawla Market, Kidwai Nagar, Barra, Baradevi, Naubasta and Ratan Lal Nagar, were worst affected. In the north, the entire VIP Road was waterlogged. Besides, the road in front of the Motijheel gate, the area under the Hallet flyover, Yateem Khana and Rizvi Road were also inundated.
The situation was worse on GT Road since a private company had dug it up for laying pipes. Vehicular movement on GT Road came to a standstill. The slippery conditions caused several accidents on the GT Road.
It was the second time within a fortnight when almost the entire city was waterlogged and the situation belied the tall claims of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) of keeping the city free of waterlogging.
Choked sewer lines and drains were again reported to be the cause behind the waterlogging. To recall, the KMC had undertaken a massive operation to clear drains and sewer lines before the onset of the monsoon.
