They said the woman developed labour pains last evening following which an ambulance was requistioned from nearby Bhavanisagar to take her to a hospital.
When the van neared Kallampalayam six adult pachyderms were found standing in mid road, making it impossible for the driver to pass through.
After a wait of more than an hour, he contacted villagers at Thengumarahatta on his mobile. They arrived there in a panchayat jeep, only to find the elephants had already left.
The woman gave birth to a still born child. She was then transported to the Government hospital at Sathyamangalam, where she is undergoing treatment, officials said.
