It couldn’t have been more apt than a woman heading the police force in the capital city of matrilineal Meghalaya.
A terror to the city's anti-socials, 40-year-old Claudia Lyngwa is the Shillong city superintendent of police and is
the first woman in the state to have cleared the police service examination.
Not only did Lyngwa handle over 300 anti-insurgency operations and led from the front in more than hundred, some of them in most hostile terrains, she also successfully juggled between home, where she has the responsibility of looking after four kids, and the workplace.
"Sometimes it is hectic, tiring and I get over-stretched. But when a job is in your hand, it has to be done. I have
tried to give my best and have never shirked responsibility," Lyngwa, twice the recipient of the President's Award for
gallantry and a host of medals conferred by the state government, says.
The Special Operations Team (SOT), which plays a key role in anti-insurgency operations in the state, is under her direct command. The SOT cadres were handpicked by her and given exclusive training to carry out certain specialized operations within the state.
After a brief stint at the customs department, Lyngwa had donned the uniform in 1996 when the state was in the peak of insurgency and has been posted in the capital city since 2000.
