While talking to HT, Vyas said, “When Rajasthan can establish fast track courts for rape cases, then why can’t UP do the same? The State does not have any schemes for the rehabilitation of rape victims too. Apart from this, the police in UP does not register complaints or lodges FIR when women knock at their doors with a complaint. It is important that some kind of a sensitisation programme is launched in UP for the masses and the women are educated.”

Vyas added, “The State Women’s Commission here is not working to its fullest potential and is not doing enough to reduce crime against women. We want that the government should have no control over the SWC.”

The NWC chairperson said, “At present, NWC is handling almost 4,000-5,000 cases from UP. Most of them come directly to us with the complaint or contact us if the SWC does not properly address their case. Notably, majority of people are dissatisfied with the working of the SWC.”

Keeping this in mind, the NWC has launched a programme, “Chalo gaon ki ore’, which would spread awareness about women’s rights and about the schemes launched by NWC.
